Dead Man’s Penny 1918

Uncle Michael, you died so young,
Age 18 in World War One
Your mother wept in Wexford County, New Ross Town
As you left to fight the good fight for the crown.

You died of the flu pandemic in a German prison
and were awarded three British medals and a
“Dead Man’s Penny”.

Your medals dated 1914 to 1918 one hundred years ago,
are all that’s left of you for fighting German foe.
The Great War and the flu gave you a coffin but, dear one
you will never be forgotten.
